YOU CAN DOUGH IT: How to Store Homemade Bread
So you’ve finally perfected that bread recipe of yours! One of the perks of making your bread at home is that the ingredients are guaranteed fresh and are free from preservatives.
However, preservative-free bread may have a shorter life which leads us to the question: how do you store bread and make it last longer?
- Containers
To keep your bread fresh and moist on the inside, you may want to invest in a bread box. Made from plastic or ceramic material, the bread box allows some air circulation to keep your bread from going stale fast.
Bread boxes help keep your bread insect-free and dust-free while maintaining its shape.
- Bags or wrappers
If you’re on the lookout for a short-term storage solution for your bread, you may want to consider bread bags. Bread bags and wrappers come in the following materials:
- Plastic: does not allow air circulation and keeps the bread soft and moist. Not recommended for sourdough as the collected moisture inside the bag will make your bread soggy.
- Paper: eco-friendly and cost-effective. Wrap your bread with a paper wrapper before storing it in a bag to keep the bread from drying out.
- Cloth or beeswax wrap: reusable and cost-effective. Recommended for longer loaves such as baguettes and does a great job at keeping bread soft without being soggy.
- Freeze it.
For long-term storage, you may keep your bread in the freezer for a longer shelf-life. Let the bread cool completely and slice the bread. Pack in plastic zip bags and store in the freezer. Before serving, take out the slices and warm them in the oven.
